The Lion (Manhatthan Theatre Club)
“What makes a Lion a Lion?” is a metaphor for what it means to become a man. Benjamin Scheuer uses this as the throughline for his autobiographical musical “The Lion,” Manhattan Theater Club describes Scheuer’s musical as “ a true story of love, loss, family loyalty and the redemptive power of music.”
“The Lion” has great musical value and a splendid book. The story deals with very personal and tragic experiences, including family problems, falling out of love, and terminal illness. These topics could lend to making any show depressing and dark, but Scheuer relieves the tension by adding comedic moments and a well composed score accompanied by great lyrics. He uses six guitars, five acoustic and one electric, to play a wide range of music styles ranging from folk…to rock…to jazz. The difference in sound while switching from one guitar to the next is subtle, but helps to create an identity and setting for each song.
The production is very simple. The set is made to look like a living room in an old New York apartment: old wooden floors, faded walls, a radiator, a small desk with books, two chairs, various microphones and of course, the guitars. The simple design of the set creates an intimate environment and a perfect platform to showcase Scheuer’s work.
Scheuer mentions his relationship to music in every stage of his life. His love of music began at an early age while listening to his father playing folk music. He carried this love of music with him throughout his life including periods of great loss and suffering. It was his music that kept him motivated and gave him the strength to handle the difficulties in his life and move forward.
I was extremely moved by “The Lion” and highly recommend seeing it before it closes later this month. Experiencing his performance made me realize that every person has their own path, constantly facing a series of challenges that makes us learn and become better people. This defines who we are meant to be. “The Lion” is presented by the Manhattan Theatre Club (at Studio II – New York City Center) through July 13th.
